Sunday through Wednesday could bring higher-than-normal temperatures, with highs in the upper 30s today and around 40 on Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service office in Valley.
For the first three days of 2018, the average high temperature in Brainerd has been 3 degrees and the average low temperature has been 23.7 degrees below zero.
Temperatures have remained below 20 degrees since December 26 and are forecast to stay below 20 degrees through the end of the week. Cold temperatures will remain for the rest of the week, with single-digit or subzero lows through Friday. The expected wind chills ranged from zero to 15 below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is in effect until 1 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5.
"We're in the heart of an arctic air mass that has built over time since the Christmas snow", said NWS meteorologist Matt Friedlein.
The Lake of MI along coast of Chicago has frozen. On Wednesday, a high of 16 degrees is in the forecast, with a low of -6 degrees expected in the nighttime hours.
The National Weather Service issued wind-chill advisories and freeze warnings Tuesday for a vast expanse of the country stretching from South Texas to Canada and from Montana through New England.

Wind chill advisory for Madison, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb counties until 9 a.m. Thursday. The high on Thursday will be 29 degrees, before temperatures dip again to 10 degrees, the weather service said.

Regardless of snow amounts, strong winds will lead to areas of significant blowing and drifting snow further impacting travel. Police believe the cold weather also may have been a factor in the death of a man in Bismarck, N.D., whose body was found near a river.
