What didn't show up in the box score was how he got into the head of LeBron James.
It's so fragile, and I don't know where it kind of went wrong, or what happened. "So they caught me on the retaliation, so - but he played well tonight".
Asked about the team's defense by a reporter, LeBron James snapped saying the reporter didn't look like he could play defense, either. In Minnesota, James scored exactly 10 points for his lowest scoring game in 10 years. More than any other Pacers player, he seems to feed off the home crowd's energy, just as the crowd feeds off him.
But comparing James' late misses with his previous heroics or delving into Cleveland missing out on Stephenson are really just distractions from the bigger picture here. Friday's funk was better than it has been lately, however.
The Cavaliers (26-16), who lost 99-133 at Toronto on Thursday, led by 22 after the first quarter on Friday yet still fell to 0-3 against the Pacers this season.
Early on, it seemed like Cleveland would walk all over the Pacers, getting a bit of revenge for their 0-2 start against IN to start the year.
The Pacers completely turned things around in the third quarter, doubling up the Cavs 32-16 and taking two-point lead into the final period.
But at least in the finale they had a chance to win. Which is what Lue was trying to address when he made his cryptic "agenda" comment after the Toronto game.
"I'm going to say this and we're going to move forward because it's over", Lue said before the Cavs played the Indiana Pacers.
LeBron is one of the greatest players and passers of all-time, so putting the ball in his hands more is rarely a problem, but if players are unhappy about him having the ball so often and they're still losing then the issue needs to be sorted out. Defensively we're executing the things we want to do, whether it's switching, handling pick-and-rolls and just being efficient in those ways.
The Pacers (22-20) need more of the good Stephenson on the road to make their trip successful. I definitely never had nobody in my family that played in the National Basketball Association and retired, so, it'll be the same. The Pacers were +14 when Stephenson was on the court, the best plus-minus number for any player on either team. It's going to start with us and just everybody getting back to what we were doing when we were playing good ball. "You got to be a man and take care of yourself", is how he put it. The Cavs, meanwhile, continue to look very much like a beatable team, especially without Isaiah Thomas.
