This news came late Friday, one day after Arlington city officials to the - which drew critics opposed to Abbott's participation - saying organizers didn't pay the full amount required for logistics including security.
Winsor Barbee, the parade's executive producer, told reporters Thursday night that the event was $65,000 short of paying Arlington's permit fees.
"Dr. King was an architect of today's push for diversity", said Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair Deborah Peoples, who will participate in the Fort Worth parade. The Arlington NAACP had the support of the local LULAC council and the Texas AFL-CIO labor group and had threatened a protest, Simmons said. "We can not have a governor with the practices and beliefs of Abbott representing Martin Luther King".
"We've been planning for the past two days how and where to protest and even how to go to jail", Pastor Kennedy Jones said.
Despite the parade's uncertain fate, the city is still hosting a four-day Martin Luther King Jr.
Last week, the Arlington NAACP announced its opposition to the parade, citing Abbott's record on things such as voting rights, education funding and immigration as evidence that he shouldn't be part of a celebration of King's legacy.
