"So I think when arguing with somebody, you have to be careful not to mischaracterize their viewpoint, so I won't mischaracterize your view either, Kathy Rae", she continued. She then defended her own comments by saying she "never" said white people couldn't talk about race, before giving Kathy Rae a pointed rebuke for her remarks, with the apparent backing of her colleagues. "It's one that we're having tonight because it's one that you are talking about at home and it's one that has clearly entered the Atlanta mayor's race", she said.
CBS not only showed her comments on-air, but allowed Reed to respond with a few graceful words (and pointed hands) of her own. Less than 800 votes separate front-runner Keisha Lance Bottoms from challenger Mary Norwood.
CBS46 news anchor Sharon Reed deserves all kinds of medals for her flawless comeback to a Kathy Rae after the viewer sent an email to the station calling Sharon a ni***r for her coverage on Atlanta's mayoral election. I didn't say, 'White people couldn't talk about race.' Quite the contrary, we think that race is an authentic discussion to have. Bottoms won, but Norwood has already filed for a recount. I get it. On Dec 5, 2017 you think it's OK to call this journalist a ni**er.
Reed chose to first display the content of the email on the big screen before she had a chance to react to it.
Unlike when she read the email, Reed did not censor the word during her own statement. "And that'll be the last word", Reed said.
Reed responded by posting the email on the station's Facebook page and reading it aloud on air.
Rae allegedly went on to say that Reed is not a black person, but a "racist (expletive)".
"We do try to keep it real here", she added.
