Wind-whipped wildfires are burning extremely dry terrain along thenorthern and western edges of Los Angeles, and, more extensively, Ventura County, northwest of the city, for a third day.
The massive Thomas Fire that has been roaring through Ventura County north of Los Angeles grew overnight thanks to increasing winds and forced the temporary closure of the 101 Freeway early this morning between the coastal towns of Carpinteria and Ventura. The Skirball Fire was spread across at least 150 acres at last estimate, authorities said.
The Getty Center and the nearby Skirball Center, both on the west side of the freeway, did not appear to be threatened, though both remained closed Thursday.
"These are days that break your heart". Health officials warned people in the heavily populated San Fernando Valley and other parts of the northern Los Angeles area to limit their time outdoors. The Getty is on a hilltop and has little accessibility, so it was designed by architect Richard Meier with disaster situations like these wildfires in mind, he said.
ABC 7 reported 350 firefighters from 52 engine companies were stationed at the scene, supported by helicopters making water drops and six fixed-wing aircrafts.
Winds are now blowing toward the south, southwest, which has put the Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness Park and the Brentwood neighborhood north of Sunset Boulevard on notice.
Dr. Dre and Lachlan Murdoch, 21st Century Fox executive chairman, live in Bel Air's gated community, Brentwood Country Estates, while former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also owns a home in the neighborhood. "The sky was bright orange". Padilla said she and her family were able to get out of her home just in time Tuesday morning but were not able to take their horses with them. "We're not done", Terrazas said.
The Getty Center has a sophisticated air filtration system that can reverse directions and push air out, Hartwig said. "The buildings themselves are made of travertine and metal panels".
"I went back to check the garage and then all of a sudden I felt some heat", George Stanley said. "While we are anxious and will be until the last ember is out, we believe the art collection is in the safest place they can be".
The Skirball Fire started near the 405 Freeway and Mulholland Drive just before 5 a.m., Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.
Any area that has brush in the city is under threat, the chief said.
"In a wind-driven event, wind is king", Hogan said. "Right now we're at a hotel".
Fire crews were continuing to struggle with strong winds up to 70 miles per hour, poor access and steep, rugged terrain, CalFire said. The institutions' Torah scrolls were removed for safekeeping, according to the report.
