"The practice originates in Naples, where around 3,000 Pizzaiuoli now live and perform, and plays a key role in fostering social gatherings and intergenerational exchange", UNESCO said in a statement after a committee added 12 new elements to the intangible list during a meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
"The art of Neapolitan pizza makers is Intangible Heritage of Humanity", Minister Dario Franceschini tweeted.
The inscription of ´KumbhMela´ was recommended by the expert body which examines in detail the nominations submitted by Member States.
The session, which started on December 4, is to end on December 9. This inscription is the third in two years for India following the inscriptions of yoga and Nouroz. The Committee observed that ´KumbhMela´ is the largest peaceful congregation of pilgrims on earth. As a religious festival, the tolerance and inclusiveness that KumbhMela demonstrates are especially valuable for the contemporary world.
In 2003, the UNESCO General Conference had adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage as an worldwide treaty, acknowledging that cultural heritage was more than tangible places, monuments and objects and that it also encompassed traditions and living expressions.
The inscription of elements on the list helps countries, which are a part of UNESCO's convention for safeguarding cultural heritage to mobilise global cooperation and assistance for ensuring that communities continue to practise and transmit such aspects of their heritage.
The Committee also took note of the fact that knowledge and skills related to Kumbh Mela are transmitted through the Guru-Shishya parampara (teacher-student relationship) by way of saints and sadhus teaching their disciples about traditional rituals and chants.
Other practices to receive resources include Botswana's Dikopelo folk music, songs about herding and milking from Colombia and Venezuela, Mongolian traditional worship, the Taskiwin martial dance from Morocco and traditional poetry recitals from the United Arab Emirates.
