The color of the year for 2018 is "ultra violet", according to Pantone Color Institute, a color consulting company that each year chooses a color that symbolizes design trends and cultural mood. The Color of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute's year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.
Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. While 2017 has had a lot of millennial pink (one of 2016's colors was rose quartz), the actual color of the year was Greenery, a pretty yellow-green shade reminiscent of springtime.
The selection draws upon influences from pop culture like Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, who both favored purple hues, Pantone said in the announcement. "The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today's over-stimulated world", said an explainer released by Pantone. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.
"As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings", said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
Pantone's color of the year has been running since the year 2000 - past winners include "honeysuckle", "marsala" and "sand dollar". The brand recommends incorporating it into the home with a couch, piece of art or accent wall.
