The meeting is a show of support for Hariri following the freakish resignation, which was believed to have been orchestrated by Saudi Arabia.
Saad Hariri addressed French President Emmanuel Macron, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and other dignitaries gathered at a Paris summit on Friday in support of the tiny Mediterranean nation. Hariri later revoked his resignation but the affair sparked a renewed debate over foreign interference in Lebanon's domestic affairs.
"For Lebanon to be protected from regional crises it's essential that all Lebanese parties and regional actors respect the principle of non-interference", Macron said. Lebanon is host to one million refugees from Syria, according to the U.N., and European nations have been dedicated to preserving its stability.
Macron intervened to try to defuse the crisis, inviting Hariri to Paris for talks, after which the Lebanese leader returned to Beirut to a hero's welcome. He say that support is the "best rampart against instability" and that the world must do more to support security, but also to provide humanitarian and economic support. The Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, announcement came at the end of the first cabinet meeting to be held since Lebanon was thrown into a political crisis following Hariri’s November 4 surprise resignation from Saudi Arabia.
Hariri's shock resignation announcement sent tremors through Lebanon, long a proxy battleground of regional powers.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert says Tillerson will affirm U.S. support for Lebanon's military. She says he will also encourage other nations to do more to constrain Hezbollah and argue that doing so will lead to a "stronger, more stable Lebanon".
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Friday said the meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon is an important gesture that requires the introduction of reforms in order to make it "successful".
