Herbert Goodine, 91, was removed from a special-care home in New Brunswick, Canada, where he lived with his wife, Audrey Goodine, 89.. I read this message over several times in disbelief of how can anyone be so cold and cruel to do this a week prior to Christmas.
In a post on Monday, Mrs Goodine Phillips wrote that her father had been transferred to Tobique Valley Manor nursing home to a relief care bed.
"Because I was unwilling to make a decision on his new location within a few hours a representative from Social Development and a representative from the Victoria Villa approached my parents and forced them to make the decision on their own", Ms Goodine Phillips wrote.
'I feel people need to know what a flawed system we have in place. "Two words describe it "unethical and cruel".
"Well, if nothing happens to her, it'll be good", he said, "because she'll be rid of me for a little while". CTV News reports Mr Goodine moved in to his new home on Monday.
She said: "My parents have been together for a total of 73 years and still sleep in the same bed".
She said that over the phone her mother had said: "Christmas is over for us now and this is the worst Christmas that we will ever have. Why could they not have waited till after the holidays?" Phillips said that though she understood her father had to be moved for extra care, the deadline was "unrealistic" and no resources were offered to them to keep her parents together for Christmas.
Phillips' Facebook post sparked outrage and had been shared more than 15,000 times at the time of writing.
In a statement to CTV, who first reported the story, the Department of Social Development said that they "understand that this hard situation has affected this couple and their family" and that people requiring special care are "moved to where their needs can be more appropriately met".
Phillips says Audrey and Herbert Goodine will spend Christmas together with her in Fredericton.
Ms Goodine Phillips said her father's health has been deteriorating.
The care home that had housed the couple said in a post on Facebook that they were a Level 2 facility.
"I would hope that anyone who is passing judgement on any situation in any home would get all facts before spewing nonsense".
"My request during the day was to simply extend my father's residency until the end of this week".
