Speaking at a special session of Israel's parliament marking Sadat's landmark speech there forty years ago, Hazem Khairat called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to "re-evaluate Sadat's message" and seize what he said was a "real opportunity" to normalize ties with Israel's other Arab neighbors by forging peace with the Palestinians.
Sadat's 1977 address to the Knesset is credited with paving a path for peace between the countries.
In speaking with Army Radio, Khairat referenced Sadat's speech to the Knesset and said that those "who bear responsibility have to be courageous and take fateful decisions".
"Today we mark 40 years to the historic visit of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Jerusalem and Israel", Efe news quoted Netanyahu as saying. Sadat's visit helped pave the way for Israeli-Egyptian talks at Camp David a year later, and a full peace agreement between the two former archenemies in 1979, just six years after the painful Yom Kippur War. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the occasion and discussed the possibility of negotiations with the Palestinians. He was later assassinated for making peace with the Jewish state.
That framework, backed by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, is an extension of the peace initiative started by Sadat 40 years ago, Khairat said at a Knesset event attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.
"Egypt still carries the flag of peace", Khairat said of his country's relations with Israel today. And I hope that in the future it will also contribute to the expansion of the circle of peace. "The peace between Israel and Egypt is strong and strategically beneficial for both countries". "We offer peace to all of our neighbors".
"I was born into peace", she said.
