Just as it did a year ago, South Alabama jumped out to an early lead. The Jaguars are 0-1 in the Sun Belt and 4-1 with the under.
Neither team lit it up offensively, with the Jaguars and Trojans combining for six punts and going a combined 0-for-6 on third down. On offense, Troy is putting up 24 points and 431.6 yards per contest. Pass interference in the end zone moved the ball inside the 5 and Xavier Johnson dove over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown and a 7-0 US lead with 3:10 left in the quarter.
Will Troy and South Alabama be able to put up enough points to hit the over when the two teams meet up on Wednesday at 8PM ET? Four plays later, United States of America scored to go up 7-0. The Trojans are averaging 181.2 yards rushing and 250.0 yards passing so far this season.
Troy's offense continued to struggle in the second half, going three-and-out on the first drive. Jeremy Reaves added an interception at the Jaguars' 2-yard line, while Zach Befort added a fumble recovery. While Troy should have success against the South Alabama defense, I don't think it will be enough to carry the over.
Freshman Troy kicker Evan Legassey missed two field goals under 35-yards and freshman punt returner, and Enterprise native, Marcus Jones fumbled two punt returns. Dallas Davis missed the last game with a shoulder injury.
South Alabama is 1-4 coming into this week's game following a 34-16 loss to Louisiana Tech. Johnson remains 13 yards short of the school rushing record.
South Alabama led 9-0 at halftime thanks to a safety after Troy running back Jordan Chunn lost a yard on a run near the goal line. Davis completed three of his for passes for 39 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown to Malik Stanley to increase the lead to 16-0. The touchdown play came on third-and-6, one of three third-down conversions for US on the drive. He has thrown for 487 yards and three touchdowns this year.
The South Alabama Jaguars are ranked 113 on offense, averaging 329.0 yards per game. The ball barely made it over the crossbar, but gave the Jaguars a 3-score lead.
Silvers threw for 263 yards with one interception for Troy (4-2, 1-1).
The Jaguars then ran out the clock for the win, getting a big third-down run by Denzel Foster. Tra Minter caught three passes for 83 yards for the Jags.
