He expressed confidence that governors and lieutenant governors would continue to make important contributions for giving new direction to development in their respective states. The agenda of the conference has been shaped by the over-arching national mission to achieve "New India-2022".
Addressing a two-day conference of governors and Lt governors of states and union territories yesterday, Kovind had said their obligation to commit themselves to the welfare of the people was more pronounced in the "current paradigm of cooperative federalism".
"The president said that being an intrinsic part of the legislative system in their states, governors can provide a new dimension to the development of their states by communicating with legislators, and inviting them to Raj Bhavan to deliberate on subjects related to public well-being", a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan quoted Kovind as saying.
The President said that in today's digital era, people expect public services to be simple, transparent and there should be appropriate provisions for accountability. The future of the country depends on the capacities, moral values and compassion of the younger generation. "The role of the governors becomes even more important in ensuring education and development in tribal areas", the president said. It will also mean access to quality education, training and skill development, healthcare, cleanliness, open-defecation free cities and villages, pollution free environment, safety and security of citizens.
The President pointed out that 69 per cent of the universities in the country fall under the purview of state governments and 94 per cent of all college and university students study in these institutions, a statement said.
Speaking at the same conference, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said governors should act as catalysts and facilitators in the process of change.
He also thanked the Governors for the various inputs given during the course of the two-day conference. There was also a presentation by Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, on the elements of "New India 2022". In the concluding session, a brief report on the deliberations will be presented by the respective conveners.
