Update on Missing Child - Sherin Mathews:We have information that the Mathews' 2013 maroon Acura MDX SUV was absent... Police say the video could be crucial in confirming or disproving claims by Sherins father.
37-year-old Wesley Mathews, a native of Kerala, was the last person to have seen Sherin, before she went missing in the wee hours of Saturday- according to his own admission. He chose to leave her outside alone in the dark until roughly 3:15 AM as a form of discipline after she refused to drink milk.
According to the affidavit, he told her to stand near a large tree in the backyard. "All she wants is for her daughter to be returned". He said the delay in reporting the matter "is certainly concerning to us".
Perlich said Mathews and his wife adopted Sherin, who was malnourished when the couple took her in.
The search for the girl has expanded beyond the neighborhood and police are contacting sex offenders and businesses in the area that could potentially have useful surveillance video.
Police said Mathews went back inside the house thinking Sherin would eventually come back home. "I don't know what happened".
Police won't say how they know the auto was missing or who was driving, but urged residents and businesses in the area to review surveillance video for any signs of the vehicle.Investigators removed three of the family's cars, including the Acura SUV, from the home earlier this week for analysis. Authorities haven't yet indicated what, if anything, was found. Child Protectives Services said it has dealt with the family before but would not elaborate. A CPS spokeswoman, Marissa Gonzales, said the agency has had dealings with the family before, but she declined to release additional information.
Sherin stands 3 feet tall and weighs around 22 pounds.
Sherin Matthews had developmental disabilities and trouble communicating.
