"By committing to a schedule of VR games, we've been able to listen to fan feedback in real-time and deploy improvements on a weekly basis", said Jeff Marsilio, NBA Vice President, Global Media Distribution.
This season, 27 live games in VR are on the schedule, starting with the October 21 game between the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, which is free during the NBA League Pass preview period.
NextVR is set to roll out a new set of features for this year's iteration, including live volumetric telestration, live infographics, and the live insertion of dynamic stats into the 360º environment. "The fan response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to seeing their reaction to this year's new VR capabilities".
Every NBA League Pass game this season will be available for subscribers to watch on headsets in a virtual environment with NextVR Screening Room. This virtual screen will enable fans to select up to 13 games to livestream. If you don't own a Samsung VR or Google Daydream you will soon have another option with Windows Mixed Reality headset.
To watch games in VR you have to be a NBA League Pass subscriber, either through your cable provider or directly from the NBA. A new point-of-view feature will also give you more control over the proceedings during the 27 live games (much like what Fox offered as part of its Super Bowl 51 VR suite).
"Following a groundbreaking first season of National Basketball Association games in VR, we will introduce new product features, including real-time graphics floating like holograms within the field-of-play, deliver sharper images, and introduce more VR devices to fans", NextVR CEO David Cole said in a statement.
