Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales was mum on the threat of President Rodrigo Duterte Wednesday that he would file an impeachment case against her over the alleged illegally obtained documents concerning his and his family's bank transactions.
This follows Duterte's statement that he will form a commission to investigate the Ombudsman for alleged partiality and corruption.
The senator believes the results of the Ombudsman's investigation could be used in the filing of an impeachment complaint against Mr. Duterte.
"Like he [President Rodrigo Duterte] has said, the ombudsman has been continually investigating him and it is for them to really...in other words, it's not anything new. Investigate on its own, or on complaint by any person, any act or omission of any public official, employee, office or agency, when such act or omission appears to be illegal, unjust, improper, or inefficient".
Akbayan also assailed administrative complaints filed by former lawmakers Jacinto Paras and Glenn Chong, and lawyers Manuelito Luna and Eligio Mallari, against Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Carandang in relation the anti-graft agency's investigation of the Duterte case.
The AMLC, however, denied providing reports to the Ombudsman on the matter.
"I feel vindicated. I am happy that the Ombudsman confirmed my allegations are true, that billions of pesos went into the bank accounts of Duterte", said Trillanes.
The Council says they have not yet provided documents to the Office of the Ombudsman.
"The Ombudsman is just doing her job".
"In a time where people cower in fear to the president's threats, Ombudsman Morales has shown that she will do her duty without fear or favor", Akbayan Secretary General Kit Melgar said.
Neither Morales nor any official from the ombudsman, however, came out of the office to accept Akbayan's recognition.
