Andrew Cuomo on Sunday launched a state effort to help hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.
Lopez was named co-chair of a NY state initiative to assist Puerto Rico, which will include public donation centers and government monitoring for potential abuses in aid solicitation.
"Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and today Puerto Rican needs our help", the Bronx-born singer and actress, who will co-chair New York's effort, said at Manhattan's Javits Center, where donations will be coordinated. The catastrophic hurricanes were the strongest to hit Puerto Rico in nearly a century. The New York Power Authority said it was also sending a crew of 10 people, including translators, as well as drone and drone pilots from state the Department of Environmental Conservation, to assist with assessment and reconstruction of Puerto Rico's power grid. "New Yorkers take care of their family".
The Democrat announced the relief effort after visiting the island Friday.
Cuomo was joined by entertainer Jennifer Lopez for the announcement.
The dam was cracked but had not burst by late Saturday.
Fears that the dam would fail prompted the government to evacuate nearby residents.
Engineers on Sunday planned to inspect the roughly 90-year-old Guajataca Dam, which holds back a reservoir covering about 2 square miles in northwest Puerto Rico. "We hope these donations will help alleviate some of the stress and pain people are experiencing while addressing some of their most basic needs", said Facundo L. Bacardi, chairman of Bacardi Limited.
A joint French, British and Dutch aid coordination effort is also underway for Caribbean territories with lingering ties to Europe, after criticism that governments didn't sufficiently prepare the islands for this season's hurricanes. The week before, Cuomo traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands following Hurricane Irma.
