The last time that happened was in 1921, when Paris again went first, hosting the 1924 games, while Amsterdam took the 1928 games.
U.S. IOC Executive Board Member and LA 2028 Senior Advisor for Legacy Anita DeFrantz said: "I couldn't be more proud that my beloved city will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028".
The International Olympic Committee has chosen Paris to host the 2024 summer games and Los Angeles to host the following 2028 summer games.
The IOC chose to award two games at the same time, and L.A. later abandoned its bid for 2024 during negotiations with the IOC and Paris. It marks the first time that the worldwide body has awarded two Summer Olympics at the same time.
Paris 2024 officials hugged and cheered following the vote, basking in victory after three previous failed bids to land the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
"Despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee has awarded LA the bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, the fight isn't over", said the group in a statement. We're very, very excited about it and I'm excited to be a part of that team.
The presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, who also spoke on Wednesday in a video message, at the IOC's extraordinary session in July in Lausanne was seen as crucial in sealing the deal for the French capital for 2024.
"We believe that these extra four years will give us time to make our games better", Evans said.
In anticipation of the IOC's decision, sites around LA were illuminated Tuesday, including the Olympic cauldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where opening ceremonies were held for both the 1932 and 1984 games.
"It is an fantastic and defining honor for a city to host the Games, and Los Angeles stands ready to surpass all expectations in 2028".
