Mr Carmody, who was head of security at Sydney airport between 1991 and 1995, said more checks needed to be done to verify the identity of domestic passengers, including linking airline booking systems to security agencies databases to identify potential terror risks and asking them to produce photo ID when they board.
But Sydney Airport's plan takes that further, linking the same facial recognition system with every other touchpoint throughout the terminal, including baggage drop, admission to the security screening queues, clearing passport control without a passport, completing duty-free purchases and even entering airline lounges document-free.

Passengers at Sydney Airport were left waiting for their flights after following advice to arrive early, according to Sydney Morning Herald.
Mr Dutton advised passengers to arrive at airports three hours before global flights and two hours for domestic flights in order to clear the heightened security.
Mr Turnbull said vetting measures for staff are now "robust" but they would also be "constantly improving".
Swab tests for explosives and inspections of carry-on luggage were stepped up and conducted before passengers reached metal detector security points, while extra Federal Police were also deployed to patrol terminals.
