"I think that the president unfortunately has elevated Kim Jong-Un now", McCaskill said at a town hall meeting Friday, the Daily Journal Online reported.
"The time for cranking up the anti-war machine is right now", he said.
After his speech, Ellison retracted his Trump-Kim comparison, telling the Post that saying Kim Jong-Un is more responsible than Trump is "one of those I wish I'd not said", citing the comments' ability to make him look bad.
He went on to urge the crowd that if they "don't want to get caught, deer-in-the-headlights", when missiles start flying that they should "call in North Korea immediately".
"It's tailor-made for somebody to misuse", Ellison said. I'd say he's being incredibly irresponsible and he's putting us in a situation where you could have an accidental launch.
"I subscribe to the Churchillian maxim of "jaw-jaw is always better than war-war" and given the consequences of a potential nuclear war, clearly, we do need to lower the temperature... rather than continuing in this rather bellicose way in which Donald Trump and indeed Kim Jong-un has been doing". At other planning sessions, activists plotted direct action in the case of actual hostilities.
McCaskill, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that while she's anxious about Trump's performance in high stakes negotiations with North Korea, she is confident in the missile defence systems that protect Guam and America's western coast.
"With radical beliefs like these, Democrats need to decide whether Keith Ellison deserves to speak for their party going forward", Ahrens said.
