Yesterday, District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela addressed a press conference and confirmed the death of 30 children in the last two days and seven deaths in the last 24 hours.
Opposition Demand CM Yogi's Resignation After 63 Kids Die At UP Hospital:- Blaming the state government for its sheer failure in providing proper medical facilities to the patients in time, the Congress demanded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh's resignations.
But it is being told that only on Thursday the hospital's pipeline operator had informed the head of the principal, SIC, Anesthesia Department and the nodal officer of Encephalitis Ward had a very low stock of liquid oxygen.
Kafeel Khan, a hospital doctor, also said the cause of death was not lack of oxygen.
He further said that even the Chief Minister visited the hospital recently but the hospital authority didn't even inform about any such things as being reported.
"As Yogi is the chief minister of the state, it is his responsibility to take care of the people".
The region is also one of India's poorest and registers hundreds of child deaths each year from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, which is rife in parts of eastern and northern India.
The state govt has blamed the hospital for the negligence and said a thorough probe has been ordered into the incident. Accepting that "the supply of gas was disrupted", he said "but no deaths were reported due to it". Strick action is now taken in every hospital.
It's a massacre not a tragedy, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said on Friday reacting to the incident.
Prashant Trivedi, the state's top health official, admitted there has been a problem in the pipeline which supplied oxygen.
Congress's RPN Singh also held Adityanath government's responsible for the tragedy. "Yes, 60 patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don't think it's linked to reports of oxygen shortage", said Anil Kumar, Gorakhpur's divisional commissioner.
