Ant McPartlin has spoken out for the first time since leaving rehab.
McPartlin told The Sun on Sunday that his addiction to painkillers worsened during 2016 but reached its peak earlier this year when he used a cocktail of drugs to help him through his presenting duties, including a dance routine with Take That on Saturday Night Takeaway.
He admitted to the newspaper: 'I've put Lisa through hell with mood swings and depression and how it affects you. Ant started taking painkiller medication following a knee operation in 2015.
Ant was not diagnosed as an alcoholic although he admitted he has taken a break from the booze and he plans to go without for a little longer, but that he is looking forward to having a pint - even joking about the upcoming series of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.
The 41-year-old told how he pleaded with his wife, Lisa, to bring him to hospital after overdosing on tramadol, morphine and alcohol while recovering from a second knee operation in June.
He added: "I was insane".
He continued of his wife: 'All I can say at the moment is that she's been wonderful - fantastic throughout'. It sends you insane.
The star said he was "depressed through the whole thing" because he was in pain and immobile. I took a load of stuff that day just to get through the day.
The star said: "The pain I was in was just ridiculous".
Ant said he visited a number of independent private doctors to get more tramadol prescribed.
"And I couldn't feel anything on the night".
"From the old lady who lies about her Valium supply to someone like me who was necking tramadol to the point of psychosis, in the end it's the same thing".
Before leaving for rehab, he added: "Lisa and Dec gave me a bit of a send-off from mine".
"Once I admitted I was in a bad way, they then helped get a team together because obviously I wasn't in a fit state to do it myself".
"I can't go to Australia and not have a cold one at the surf club with Dec like we normally do". But there are a lot of people who don't.
'I'm very sorry about the effect it has on partners.
