During the interview, Priebus described the news media as "dishonest" and blamed headlines about the federal investigations into Russia's ties to the Trump presidential campaign for distracting the country from what the Trump administration is accomplishing.
Kelly, who had enlisted in the Marines in 1970, served as commander of U.S. southern command under Obama from 2012.
Trump tweeted the change after he returned to Washington from NY yesterday.
Scaramucci also called Chief of Staff Reince Priebus "a f-king paranoid schizophrenic" during the phone call.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Kelly would begin his new role on Monday. The presence of Scaramucci, known as the Mooch and who would report directly to Trump (and not Priebus), prompted White House press secretary Sean Spicer to resign.
Priebus, before serving as chairman of the Republican National Committee for six years, was chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party. Priebus accompanied Trump on a trip to New York Friday afternoon, and Trump's tweet was sent as the pair were on Air Force One returning to Washington. "When I said we were brothers from the podium, that's because we're rough on each other", Scaramucci said.
Washington veteran Elaine Duke is set to temporarily take the helm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following a dramatic shakeup up at the White House this week.
"Reince is a good man", Trump told reporters as he left the aircraft.
Talking to the press after being appointed the White House communications director last week, Scaramucci had called Preibus "a dear friend". In a White House that prizes loyalty above all else, the chief of staff never managed to gain the president's trust or win the respect of his colleagues.
In his interview with CNN, Priebus said he submitted his resignation to the President privately on Thursday. But it's unclear whether the two will see eye to eye on one of the major issues dogging Trump's White House.
Trump appointed Kelly, a retired Marine general, to secretary of Homeland Security on December 7, 2016 and he was confirmed on January, 20, 2017 the first day of Trump's administration.
JUDY WOODRUFF: Well, it is - as you and I were just saying, it's one more tumultuous day in what's been nonstop tumult.
Pence also congratulated Kelly, writing, "I know you will do a great job!"
"I predict the White House will become more orderly and disciplined - with clear lines of authority, serious planning and strong teamwork", Gingrich wrote Friday evening.
"If Reince wants to explain he is not a leaker, let him do that", Scaramucci said on CNN's "New Day".
"I don't think that is adding stability to the White House and right now the White House needs a lot stability". "He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately", said Ryan.
