Despite the controversy that has ensued, the White House has yet to apologize for the Trump National Scout Jamboree speech that has now been described by the Boy Scouts of America as being filled with "political rhetoric". "We are not to going to censor or edit the president of the United States". Shelley Moore Capito for her health care debate vote and quipped that he would fire his human services secretary, Tom Price, if he did not gather enough votes to pass the motion to allow that debate. "[Shelley Moore] Capito to vote for it", Trump said, referencing the Republican senator from West Virginia.
Then, he reminisced (in detail) about his Electoral College victory in November.
On Thursday, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America Michael Surbaugh issued a public apology letter on behalf of the organization, actually apologizing for the words of a sitting POTUS in what appears to be an unprecedented move. To turn the event into a political rally and the opportunity to replay all of his favorite themes was a disservice to the Scouts.
The National Scout Jamboree only happens once every four years. "The invitation for the sitting US president to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies".
The head of the Boy Scouts said that, "Look, it is not the intention of us to endorse any candidate".
"For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters".
On Thursday, Surbaugh wrote, "We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program". "From what we were hearing on the news it seems like there was a lot of difference from what we saw and the new was portraying it". One scout mother said the President could have made better use of his time with the young scouts. Trump-who, unlike Presidents Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, and John F. Kennedy-was never a member of the Boy Scouts, excoriated his predecessor for not making an in-person appearance at the Jamboree.
